Hong Kong‘s Airport Authority (AA) has signed an agreement with Hong Kong Airlines to build a new flight training centre at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

The facility will be developed on a 6,000m² plot of land of at the southeast edge of the airport island. Hong Kong Airlines plans to construct two connected buildings: one administration block and one flight simulator block that will house 12 simulators to replicate all the airline’s planned aircraft types.

The facility will also have a large safety training hall including one full-size mock aircraft cabin, as well as classrooms and training rooms. Construction is expected to begin in 2015, with a targeted completion date of year-end 2017.

“It has always been the AA’s policy to support the development of home-based carriers,” said Fred Lam, the AA’s CEO. “Flight training centres are crucial facilities for home-based carriers, as airline pilots have to be frequently trained and re-trained for different aircraft models.”

Zhang Kui, president of Hong Kong Airlines, added that he hoped the new facility would “help motivate and inspire young people of Hong Kong to develop their careers in aviation”.

Upon completion, the new Hong Kong Airlines Training Centre will be the third facility of its kind on the HKIA airport island.
