Hong Kong Airlines has made its Australian debut with the launch of a new service to Cairns and the Gold Coast.

The new triangular route commenced on 8 January and will now operate three times a week from Hong Kong.

Flights will now depart Hong Kong International Airport every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 2120 and arrive in the Gold Coast at 0830 the following day. The flights then take off again every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 1030 and arrive in Cairns at 1245. The return leg will see flights leave Cairns at 1355 and arrive back in Hong Kong at 1910.

To celebrate the launch of this new route, Hong Kong Airlines held celebration events at HKIA and Gold Coast Airport. All passengers were presented with a commemorative certificate and boarding pass envelope to mark the occasion. And on arrival in the Gold Coast Airport, the inaugural flight received a traditional water cannon salute.

“We are delighted with the successful launch of this much-anticipated new Australian route,” said Li Dianchun, commercial director of Hong Kong Airlines. “So far, we have received an overwhelming response among travellers since tickets became available for purchase.

“We expect Australia will become a popular destination with our travellers who would like to enjoy the beautiful weather, stunning coastline and exciting activities that the Gold Coast and Cairns have to offer, further strengthening the cultural, tourism and business ties between these two countries,” he added.

Hong Kong Airlines’ route map now covers 30 major cities across the Asia Pacific region, and next month the airline will launch a new service to Cambodia. The three weekly direct flights between Hong Kong and Phnom Penh will kick off on 27 February 2016.
