Hong Kong has announced plans to raise its airport departure tax.
From 1 June 2014, the so-called “passenger security charge”, which is collected from each departing passenger at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), will be increased 36% from HK$33 to HK$45 (US$4.30 to US$5.80).
This hike marks the first increase of the charge since 2002, and Hong Kong’s Airport Authority (AA) said the extra funds were necessary to cover the cost of additional security measures.
“The airport has deployed more manpower and upgraded technologies over the years to satisfy the additional security requirements for access control and security screening. The adjustment is deemed necessary to recover the additional costs associated with these security measures,” the AA said in a statement.
It also noted that the charges are still lower than other international airports, such as Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Singapore Changi and Frankfurt.
