Indian Railways is accelerating the roll-out of power sockets on its trains, to allow passengers to charge up their mobile devices.

The Press Trust of India reports that the number of charging points per carriage will be more-than-doubled, to cater for rising demand from passengers. So far, 7,977 sleeper coaches and 4,634 general coaches have been equipped with 18 charging points.

“Earlier, there were only eight mobile charging points in a coach. However, in keeping pace with the changing times, we have decided to increase the number of sockets to 18 as the use of mobile phone and laptop have gone up considerably,” a senior Railway Ministry official was quoted saying.

The additional power sockets form part of a drive to modernise Indian rail network, with Wi-Fi services also now available at many key stations.
