India’s railway authorities are trialling a new semi-high-speed service on the route between Delhi and Agra.
The Times of India reported this week that the test run is due to be held on 3 July, with a view to launching commercial operations in November 2014.
The new semi-high-speed eclectic trains will operate at speeds of up to 160mph (257kph). They will feature 10 carriages, with services operating from Delhi to Agra and back in the same day.
The new trains are expected to provide a boost to India’s tourism industry. The ‘Golden Triangle’ region between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is one of the country’s most popular tourism circuits, and the new semi-fast services will enable guests to access Agra’s Taj Mahal more quickly and easily.
Following the Delhi-Agra trials, the new semi-high-speed train will also be tested on the routes from the Indian capital to Kanpur and Chandigarh.
