Japan Airlines has moved to expand its fleet of regional jets with a deal for 32 Mitsubishi MRJ aircraft.
The MRJ, or Mitsubishi Regional Jet, will become the first passenger aircraft designed and built in Japan, and is expected to start operating commercially in 2017. It will be able to seat between 70 and 90 passengers in a 2-2 configuration.
JAL’s MRJs will be operated by its subsidiary J-Air, with deliveries expected to commence in 2021. The new aircraft will complement J-Air’s existing fleet of Bombardier and Embraer jets.
“JAL will operate the MRJ as the key aircraft of its regional jet fleet,” said Yoshiharu Ueki, president of JAL. “As a network carrier that also operates regional jets, we are contributing to the birth of Japan’s first passenger jet.”
So far, Mitsubishi has taken commitments for 407 MRJs, including 223 firm orders. Other airlines expected to operate the new aircraft include ANA, under its ANA Wings subsidiary, and Myanmar’s Air Mandalay.
