KLM will commence a tour of the UK this week with an aircraft built in the 1940s to celebrate its 95th birthday.
The Dutch carrier’s retro Dakota DC3 aircraft will land at Newcastle on Wednesday (25 June) followed by Durham Tees Valley on Thursday; Humberside Airport on Friday and Norwich Airport on Saturday.
Built in 1944, the DC3 was the first commercial aircraft, with this week’s passengers to travel in the same way others did in the era.
The aircraft used for this tour was in service with the 8th Air Force during World War II and after was the official aircraft of the Dutch government. On retirement in 1975 the aircraft was part of a museum but was put back into service in 1998 and in 2010 received the KLM look and christened ‘Princes Amalia’ after the current heiress to the Dutch throne.
“Our regional bases are incredibly important to KLM and it is fantastic to be able to showcase our heritage to the local community,” said Warner Rootliep, general manager UK & Ireland at Air France KLM.
