TAM Airlines is to leave the Star Alliance next year to join sister airline LAN at oneworld.
Under the newly-merged LATAM Airlines Group the two carriers, along with LAN Colombia, are set to both be part of oneworld from early 2014.
LAN Colombia will join oneworld as an affiliate member this winter along with LAN Argentina, LAN Ecuador and LAN Peru.
TAM’s exact exit from Star is yet to be announced but will come as a blow to the alliance as it will lose the Latin America network. This instead will be covered by TAP Portugal’s routes.
“We evaluated all the possibilities and chose the alliance that offers the best benefits to our passengers, besides the best connectivity and products, as well as the greater synergies for LATAM Airlines Group. We are very happy with the decision,” said Enrique Cueto, CEO of LATAM.
oneworld’s CEO Bruce Ashby welcomed the news, saying it would ensure a smooth transition
