Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines have called time on their codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines.
According to the German press, the carriers said the current set-up no longer “makes financial sense” after Turkish Airlines built its own route network from its Istanbul base to regional airports in Germany and Austria.
The agreement between the two Star Alliance members, which covered domestic German services and US-bound flights, will now cease on 29 March 2014.
However Turkish Airlines said it did not approve of the decision and will hope to build bridges.
A statement from the airline said: “We do not approve the unilateral decision of Lufthansa that taken on these two issues and hope to be reconsidered. Turkish Airlines provides its services to all passengers of Star Alliance member airlines, as being a member of it. Joint flights (code-share) and FFPE [frequent flyer] applications should be considered in this context.”
Back in October Lufthansa’s chief financial officer Simone Menne told aero.de that talks between the two for a deeper partnership had been put on hold.
