Verdi, the German union that represents airport workers, has confirmed plans to strike at multiple airports on Wednesday.

Lufthansa warned that “extensive cancellations” would impact “tens of thousands of travellers” tomorrow, as the strikes limit ground handling and security operations at six German airports, including Frankfurt and Munich.

All long-haul flights to and from Munich Airport have been cancelled on Wednesday 27 April, while only a small number of domestic and European routes will be operated.

Frankfurt will suffer less of an impact, with Lufthansa saying that it plans to operate “most” of its international flights to and from the airport tomorrow, even during the strike period of 4.30am to 3pm. However, most domestic flights and numerous European services will be cancelled at Frankfurt on Wednesday.

Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, Dortmund and Hanover airports will also suffer flight cancellations as a result of the Verdi strike.

Dr Bettina Volkens, Lufthansa’s chief officer for corporate HR, accused Verdi – which represents workers in many industry sectors – as using aviation for “its high media profile”.

“Once again, our travellers will be affected by industrial action that is being taken in connection with collective bargaining negotiations in which Lufthansa is totally uninvolved,” she added.

The special timetable has been published on Lufthansa’s LH.com website. Travellers due to fly on Wednesday are urged to check the status of their flight, and Lufthansa will also be informing affected travellers by email or SMS.
