More Thais are choosing to take overseas holidays, but not with their spouses or partners, a new study has revealed.

According to the latest edition of the ‘Visa Global Travel Intentions Study’, 89% of Thai respondents said they have travelled overseas for leisure in the past two years, spending on average THB44,000 (approx. US$1,300) per trip.

But almost half of the respondents said they prefer to travel with a group of friends or colleagues rather than with their partners and spouses. This differs considerably from the global average; just 36% of Thais said they travel in couples, compared to 58% of global travellers.

And the financial behaviour of Thai travellers also differs from their global counterparts, according to Visa.

“Thais are more inclined to find travel deals that reflect their budgets compared to global travellers. While both spend the majority of their money during the trip, interestingly Thais use credit cards more at destinations,” said Somboon Krobteeranon, Visa’s country manager for Thailand.

Shopping (31%), dining (22%), and accommodation (10%) were the items Thai travellers spend the most money on during their trips. And Thais are also planning to significantly increase their holiday spend in future; while the average holiday budget for the most recent trip was THB44,000, Thai travellers said they are planning to spend an average of THB83,000 on their next overseas adventure.

Regional destinations were the most popular among Thai travellers, with Japan, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, and South Korea comprising the top five. An average trip lasts six nights and takes five hours of journey time.
