Authorities in Mumbai are planning to offer a cleaner experience for travellers on the city’s metro network, with a series of initiatives to make the trains “germ-free”.
The Economic Times reports that a series of trials have been conducted to test the metro for bacteria and identify the correct types disinfectants. The carriages were then sprayed, reducing bacteria on washroom basins, floors and door handles to “negligible levels”.
“The highly effective sanitation and hygiene programme made a soft launch at Ghatkopar, Andheri and Sakinaka metro stations. As a part of its Swachh Metro Abhiyaan, the new initiative was formally unveiled to mark the first anniversary of the launch of the Swachh Bharat campaign,” a Mumbai Metro official was quoted saying.
Unlike India’s railway network, the Mumbai Metro has gained a good reputation for cleanliness since its launch last year, with trains, stations and equipment all being regularly cleaned.
