Japan Airlines is introducing a new lightweight cargo container that will help it reduce fuel consumption on its international flights.
The airline started rolling out 480 new synthetic containers this month, each of which weighs just 58kg – 41kg less than the previous aluminium versions. A maximum of 44 containers can be used on a single Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, saving 1,804kg per flight.
And JAL said this would translate into a saving of approximately 800 litres of fuel for a one-way trip on the Tokyo-New York route, which will save the airline money as well as being better for the environment.
The airline added that the honeycomb structure of the new containers makes them more durable than the old versions.
