In a survey of 1000 Brits more than 20% agreed that New Year’s Eve was the most stressful time of year, more so than Valentine’s Day or their partner’s birthday.

The airbnb report found that more than two thirds of stressed out Brits (83%) want to get away this year, with a third (28%) keen to get as far away from home as possible, explaining why Londoners are finding a home away from home on the other side of the world this New Year’s Eve, with Sydney ranking above any other destination.

But out of those not going Down Under this year, there are already 10,500 people booked into cabins in the woods on Airbnb, 100 to private islands and 20 brave people are heading to igloos to welcome in 2016.

A third (32%) of Brits are planning on spending the night with a group of friends, 41% with their families and over half (51%) with their partner. Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Kauai in Hawaii, and Hamburg, Germany are the places topping the list for global users escaping with their significant other.

James McClure, general manager Airbnb UK and Ireland said: “New Year’s Eve can be a stressful time of year and sometimes by the time Christmas is over people can feel that they need another holiday, so we’re not surprised that we experienced our highest number of guests ever on December 31st last year. This New Year’s Eve we’re expecting over a million people to stay in Airbnbs across the globe, more than double the number of guests that we saw on the same night in 2015.”

Last year more than 550,000 people stayed in Airbnbs on New Year’s Eve across 190 countries.  On the night itself 91,000 were new guests using Airbnb for the first time, 22,000 were new hosts opening their home to visitors.
