On The Go Tours has launched a new private tour to UNESCO World Heritage Site Easter Island.
The operator’s new five-day tour encompasses the island’s iconic highlights, including its mysterious stone Moai statues. As a private tour, local guides are on hand during the scheduled sightseeing excursions, to impart their expert insight.
The newly curated Easter Island Explorer itinerary allows explorers to experience the culture and history of one of the world’s most remote islands, lying 3,686km from the Chilean mainland. Starting and finishing in Hanga Roa, the tour takes in all four corners of the island, from Anakena in the north and Ahu Tongariki in the east to Ahu Akahanga in the south and Orongo in the west.
The private tour begins with a full-day sightseeing excursion to Ahu Akahanga, a ruinous site and ceremonial platform, believed to be the burial place of the island’s first king. This is followed by a visit to Ahu Tongariki, the largest Moai site on Easter Island with a line-up of 15 Moai statues – one of the most iconic images of the islet.
Explorers will then delve further into the history of the island, visiting the stone village of Orongo, perched on the edge of extinct volcano Rano Kau. Inhabited just a few weeks every year during the era of the birdman competition, the ceremonial village is made up of 54 homes, where visitors will discover petroglyphs, depicting the winners of the competition. An exploration up the extinct Rano Kau volcano follows, along with a visit to Rapa Nui National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, certified for its cultural importance.
The tour meanders across the north west of the island with a visit to Ahu Akivi, the only sacred platform where Moai statues face the ocean. Travellers will also find Ana Te Pahu cave, an underground channel created by volcanic lava, and Puna-Pau quarry, the island’s only source of red scoria stone. The stone was used to carve the pukao, a hat-like structure, which sits on the head of some Moai statues.
The five-day tour starts from £869 per person. Price includes four nights in 3* accommodation, daily breakfast, one lunch, and three full day excursions.
