ABTA has urged expansion at both Heathrow and Gatwick in its response to the Airport Commission’s final consultation.
The association said both airports have made ‘compelling cases’ for a new runway and argued both are logical steps to generate enough capacity up to 2050.
While the Commission is looking at capacity needs up to 2030, ABTA pushed that a decision soon after the General Election would also serve demand needs for a longer period.
It also reiterated the need for a swift decision from the next Parliament as the UK falls behind in the world’s air traffic connectivity stakes. Dubai International Airport has now overtaken Heathrow as the world’s busiest hub.
“Increasing airport capacity is essential to the UK’s growth and global competitiveness; urgent action is needed. The Airports Commission has identified the need for two additional runways in the South East by 2050, and their detailed and extensive work should be used by the government to produce a long-term vision for the UK’s aviation industry to 2050. This should involve planning permission for an additional runway at both Gatwick and Heathrow,” said Mark Tanzer, ABTA’s chief executive.
