Hotel guests staying in the UK in the first half of 2015 paid an average room rate of £104 a night, a 1% decrease on the same time period in 2014.
The data released in the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index (HPI) showed that the although the national average fell, the positive influx of visitors was felt across the country as prices rose in 35 of the 45 UK destinations included in the report, with overall consumer spending rising to a five year high.
The HPI looks at actual prices paid per night from January – June in 2015 by all hotel guests in destinations in the UK compared to the same time period in 2014. Domestic and international visitors in London witnessed a fall of 1% for accommodation in the capital, with its average price decreasing to £135 from £137. The Isle of Wight and Coventry recorded the greatest gains of 15%, rising to £78 (from £68) and £64 (from £55) respectively.
Scotland continued its strong performance by claiming the top spot overall in the price chart with St Andrews reporting average paid per night at £153, even after falling 5% from £161. Edinburgh, reported a decrease of 2%, featured in the top ten destinations on the price table with the highest average prices paid per night (£105 down from £107). Aberdeen witnessed the largest decrease, with room rates falling 18% to an average paid per night of £97 (from £118), followed by Dundee seeing rates decrease by 8% to £83 (from £90) per night. In Wales, both Cardiff and Swansea saw their average prices paid increase, with the Capital rising 14% to £87 and Swansea up 9% to £79 per night. In Northern Ireland, Belfast prices paid grew 12% to £90 per night while Derry/Londonderry increased by 1% to an average paid of £70 per night.
At the other end of the scale, prices paid in Bradford continued to be great value with average prices paid in the first half of 2015 sitting at £54, even after a 10% increase from the average in the first half of 2014, and still less than half the national average (£104). Blackpool and Scarborough offered the second and third best value for money with average prices paid of £60 and £62 per night respectively (even after Scarborough saw a 4% increase)
Price decreases were registered in only seven UK destinations included in the report and remained flat in three, however with the current Rugby World Cup captivating domestic and international travellers, the 12 host cities could be set to see average room rates increase throughout the second half of the year.
