Lufthansa Airlines posted a profit

German airline group Lufthansa has posted a drop in operating profit for the first nine months of this year compared to the same period in 2012.

The group posted a profit of EUR661m against EUR907m last year, although before the costs were factored in had seen its numbers rise 47% to EUR859m.

Passenger numbers declined but have gone up on European routes, mainly due to germanwings.

“Our progress is confirmation of the fact that, strategically, we are on the right track. It also serves to motivate us to develop our strengths further”, said Christoph Franz, chairman and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG.

Lufthansa Airlines posted a profit of EUR300, while Swiss saw a profit of EUR182m.

Savings boost Austrian profit

The merger of Austrian Airlines with Tyrolean’s services has helped the group increase its operating profit for the year so far.

Austria’s national carrier has seen its operating profit for the year up to 30 September rise to EUR19.4 million from the EUR10.3m posted last year.

The airline is now confident it will end 2013 with profits in the low double-digit millions.
