Japan’s two largest carriers, Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA), both experienced rising profits in the first quarter of their financial year.
For the three months to 30 June 2015, ANA generated a net profit of JPY8.3 billion (US$67 million), 144% higher than the same period last year. And JAL’s results were even more impressive, with Q1 net profit jumping 122% to JPY32.6bn.
Both airlines also experienced rising revenues, but unlike ANA, JAL was also able to reduce its operating expenses.
ANA remains Japan’s biggest airline in terms of passenger traffic, carrying 11.82m passengers in the quarter, compared to JAL’s 9.55. But JAL is still Japan’s main international airline, carrying 2.01m passengers on overseas routes, compared to ANA’s 1.91m.
