Qantas will add more destinations in South America to its network following the expansion of its codeshare partnership with LAN Airlines.

The arrangement will see Qantas place its ‘QF’ code on LAN’s flights from Santiago to six destinations across the continent, including the Chilean hubs of La Serena, Antofagasta and Punta Arenas, plus Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Lima.

In turn, LAN will codeshare on several Qantas services in Australia and New Zealand.

“This is great news for Qantas customers, with greater access to popular destinations in South America than ever before,” said Qantas’ executive manager of international sales, Stephen Thompson.

“Santiago is a key gateway for our customers and this development will strengthen its prominence as hub for onward connections, offering the additional customer benefits of a codeshare service – more opportunities to earn frequent flyer points and luggage checked straight through to their final destination.”

Qantas operates three weekly direct flights between Sydney and Santiago, using its Boeing 747-400 aircraft, and will add a fourth weekly service between 21 November 2014 and 13 February 2015.

The Australian carrier also codeshares on LAN’s daily flights on the Sydney-Auckland-Santiago route.
