Qantas has launched a new direct flight between Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef Airport, offering a new connection for travellers to the Whitsunday Islands.
The new service took off for the first time today and will now operate three times a week (Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays) during high season. The Saturday service will be removed in the off-season.
The new flights mark Qantas’ return to the route after almost 10 years, and follow the launch of Tigerair Australia’s flights between Sydney and the Whitsundays earlier this year.
“Our customers told us that they wanted direct access to the Whitsundays on a premium leisure service from Sydney. Today we respond to that demand and complement Jetstar’s existing flights as part of our two-brand strategy,” said Lyell Strambi, CEO of Qantas Domestic.
“Sydney is the gateway to Australia for millions of Qantas passengers every year. These passengers can now enjoy direct access to one of the country’s most iconic holiday destinations.”
Flights will operate using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
