Qantas was the safest airline in the world in 2015, according to the annual report by AirlineRatings.com.

The website monitors the safety records of almost 450 airlines worldwide, taking into account a variety of factors such as safety records, aircraft type and government audits.

Qantas continued its excellent recent record in 2014; the Australian airline has now remained fatality-free since the dawn of the jet era. Air New Zealand, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, Finnair, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines also featured in the top 10.

“Our top 10 safest airlines are always at the forefront of safety innovation and launching new planes,” said AirlineRatings.com’s editor, Geoffrey Thomas. “These airlines are a byword for excellence.

“There is no doubt that Qantas is a standout in safety enhancements and an industry benchmark for best practice. Qantas has been the lead airline in virtually every major advancement in airline safety over the past 60 years,” he added.

AirlineRatings.com has, for the first time, also identified the 10 safest low-cost carriers. These are (in alphabetical order): Aer Lingus, Alaska Airlines, Icelandair, JetBlue, Jetstar, Kulula.com, Monarch Airlines, Thomas Cook, TUI Fly and WestJet.

“Unlike a number of low-cost carriers these airlines have all passed the stringent International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) audit and have excellent safety records,” said Thomas. “Low-cost does not mean low safety.”

The lowest safety ratings were given to three Nepalese airlines, Kam Air, Tara Air and Nepal Airlines, plus Afghanistan’s Agni Air and Kazakhstan’s Scat.
