Qantas offers in-flight virtual reality headsets

Qantas has unveiled plans to launch the world’s first virtual reality 3D experience on its aircraft.

In partnership with Samsung, the Australian airline is trialling a new system that will offer 360-degree 3D destination tours, product information and even Hollywood movies using virtual reality headsets.

Samsung Gear VR headsets will initially be made available to first class passengers on some of Qantas’ Airbus A380 flights, and in the airline’s international first class lounges in Sydney and Melbourne. The trial will run for three months.

“Whether the user wants a virtual tour of our new Los Angeles first lounge or experience an A380 landing from the tarmac, this technology gives us a completely new way to connect with our customers,” said Qantas’ group executive for brand, marketing & corporate affairs, Olivia Wirth.

“From an in-flight entertainment perspective, it’s an industry first. Qantas is committed to being at the forefront of innovation to give our passengers the very best and latest in-flight experiences, like accessing the virtual worlds of their favourite Hollywood blockbusters from the comfort of their seat.

“It’s also a fantastic tool to feature our network’s destinations, inspiring travel and promoting tourism,” she added.

Arno Lenior, chief marketing officer for Samsung Electronics Australia said the product, which is one of the electronics company’s latest innovations, will “open new worlds for Qantas customers”.

Qantas is also working with production company Jaunt to develop and produce the live-action content, including destination footage. Tourism NT has become one of the first partners for the trial, with a special 3D experience taking guests on a tour of the Kakadu National Park.

The Samsung VR headsets will be offered in the Sydney and Melbourne first class lounges from mid-February and on select A380 flights between Australia and Los Angeles from mid-March.
