Qantas has secured a deal that will see the US comedy series Modern Family filmed in Australia.
A partnership with Twentieth Century Fox will see Qantas fly the show’s cast and crew Down Under in February 2014, for two weeks of filming. The special one-off episode will follow the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker family on a holiday to Australia.
“We are excited to partner with Twentieth Century Fox to promote what Australia has to offer to the world through this special holiday episode. The humour of the show is a great fit with Australia’s own and as the national carrier we are proud to support this innovative way of encouraging more people to fly to here,” said Qantas CEO Alan Joyce.
“Qantas is the biggest private investor in promoting Australia as a destination, and the United States is one of the biggest source markets for people visiting our country. An estimated 25 million people will watch this episode when it first airs, which is fantastic exposure and great news for tourism.”
The Modern Family partnership follows Qantas’ recent tie-ups with the Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres shows. Qantas revealed that last year’s filming of the Ellen DeGeneres Show in Australia led to a 22% increase in inbound flights to New South Wales.
Modern Family’s co-creator and executive producer, Steven Levitan, said he was excited about the trip, and promised not to do any “down under jokes”. “It’ll be nice to go to a place where everyone looks like Hugh Jackman and Miranda Kerr,” Levitan added.
Qantas currently offers 80 weekly flights between Australia and the US.
