Qantas will start flying its Airbus A380 to Dallas later this year.
The Australian airline will deploy its biggest aircraft on the route between Sydney and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport from 29 September 2014, replacing the Boeing 747-400.
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said the move formed part of its international turnaround plan, designed to maximise its aircraft use.
“Aircraft are one of our biggest fixed costs and maximising the amount of time they spend in the air is good news for our customers and for Qantas – especially when it comes to the A380,” said Joyce.
“We have retimed A380 services between Melbourne and London… [and] this schedule change unlocks more A380 flying time that we can use on the Dallas route.”
The additional range of the A380 over the B747 will mean the return service will operate direct to Sydney, rather than to Brisbane. And while Qantas will fly only six weekly services on the Sydney-Dallas route using the A380, compared with seven using the B747, it still represents a 10% increase in seat capacity.
Qantas configures its A380s with 484 seats in three classes – 14 in first class, 64 in business class and 371 in economy.
