Qantas to launch Boeing’s iPad performance tool
Qantas will be the launch customer for the new iPad version of Boeing’s in-flight solution, the Onboard Performance Tool (OPT).
The OPT gives pilots information about the ideal speeds and engine settings to optimise the efficiency of any aircraft, in a range of conditions. The Australian carrier will deploy the iPad-based OPT on 130 of its Boeing aircraft in the fourth quarter of 2012.
The original OPT application has been available since early 2000 and has more than 120 customers, but this marks the first time it has been transferred to the iPad.
“The mobile OPT is the latest of our industry-leading airplane applications, part of our Digital Airline solutions suite. It was developed to give our customers a marketplace advantage as they serve their customers and run the most efficient operations possible,” said Per Noren, Boeing’s vice president of information services. “Boeing has a unique portfolio of digital solutions and we’re rapidly expanding it, making use of our existing and new, innovative technologies.”
Boeing said that more than 80 airlines have already requested quotes or more information about OPT for iPad.
