Scoot took delivery of its first ever Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft today, marking a major milestone in the airline’s development.
The Singapore-based low-cost carrier has ordered 20 Dreamliners, and the aircraft will eventually make up its entire fleet. The aircraft that touched down at Singapore’s Changi Airport on 2 February 2015 was the larger B787-9 model, seating 375 passengers in a two-class layout. Deliveries of smaller 335-seat B787-8s will commence later this year.
“This is a great moment for all of us at Scoot and the start of a new chapter in our short but exciting history,” said Campbell Wilson, Scoot’s CEO. “[The Dreamliner] will allow us to triple in size, add new destinations, increase frequencies and grow the Singapore hub, all whilst continuing to offer unbeatable value airfares.
“New and improved seats, streaming movies, in-flight internet connectivity add to all of the choices and options Scoot already provides. And not to mention the 787’s inherent advantages such as larger windows, more comfortable cabin pressure and humidity, larger stowage bins, a smoother ride, lower noise, reduced emissions, and a step-change in operating economics,” he added.
The first B787-9 is appropriately named ‘Dream Start’. It comes equipped with 340 seats in economy class and 35 in ‘ScootBiz’, Scoot’s premium economy-style offering. The aircraft will initially be introduced on the Singapore-Perth and Singapore-Hong Kong routes.
Scoot will now continue taking delivery of its B787-9s in the coming months, with the first B787-8s expected to start arriving in the third quarter of 2015.
The new aircraft will gradually replace Scoot’s existing fleet of B777-200s, which are being leased from Singapore Airlines. Eventually, Scoot will operate an all-B787 fleet.
