The proposed alliance between Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand has been approved by regulatory authorities in New Zealand.
The two national carriers will now be able to proceed with plans to coordinate their services between Singapore and New Zealand, including the launch of Airbus A380 services.
The alliance was first announced on 16 January 2014, and will lead to increased flight frequencies between Singapore and New Zealand, plus improve connections and a reciprocal codeshare agreement.
Air New Zealand will relaunch flights on the Auckland-Singapore route, while SIA will operate its A380 to New Zealand for the first time on the same route.
The Competition Commission of Singapore has already given its approval for the venture, so New Zealand’s approval marks the last piece of red tape.
Following the launch of the alliance, SIA and Air New Zealand – which are both members of the Star Alliance – will be the only airlines operating between Singapore and Auckland. Jetstar had served the route, but suspended operations earlier this year.
