Passenger traffic at Singapore’s Changi Airport continued to grow strongly in August 2013.
According to the latest data from Changi Airport Group (CAG), the airport handled 4.68 million passengers last month – 9.4% more than during August 2012. The growth was driven by an increase in flights, with the total number of take-offs and landings at Changi rising 8.2% to 29,600.
The August 2013 figures were boosted by an extra long weekend that included both the Hari Raya Puasa and National Day public holidays in Singapore. Travel to and from neighbouring countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia, which also celebrated the Hari Raya festival, registered especially strong growth.
The Indonesian traffic growth was also driven by a new bilateral air services agreement between Singapore and Indonesia, which enabled carriers to launch more flights. Garuda Indonesia added a ninth daily service to Jakarta and upgraded two of its frequencies from the single-aisle Boeing 737-800 to the twin-aisle Airbus A330. Tigerair Mandala also increased its Singapore-Jakarta services from three to four times a day, while SilkAir introduced a new thrice-weekly service to Makassar and AirAsia launched two daily services to Medan. Tigerair’s Singapore-based unit has also started a new daily service to Bandung.
In the first eight months of the year, Changi has now welcomed 35.5m passengers, up 5.4% year-on-year, while aircraft movements climbed 5.3% to 225,411. The airport now handles more than 6,700 scheduled flights per week, with aircraft taking off or landing approximately once every 100 seconds.
