SriLankan Airlines has penned a codeshare agreement with its new oneworld alliance partner, Qantas.
From 26 October 2014, Qantas will place its ‘QF’ code on SriLankan’s daily Singapore-Colombo service. And in return, SriLankan will place its ‘UL’ code on Qantas’ daily services between Singapore and Brisbane and Melbourne, and double daily services to Sydney. This will enable passengers to connect between Qantas and SriLankan’s flights at Singapore within two to three hours.
SriLankan Airlines’ head of commercial operations, Mohamed Fazeel, said he believed the new deal would stimulate tourism.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to boost tourism between Sri Lanka and Australia. Passengers from Australasia will have even greater connectivity to Colombo and South Asia, taking advantage of SriLankan Airlines’ daily frequencies to India, Pakistan and the Maldives,” Fazeel said.
“Australia is home to a sizeable Sri Lanka expatriate community and we are pleased that this new codeshare will provide them enhanced connectivity and convenience when they visit their families and friends back home.”
Qantas also codeshares on Emirates’ existing daily Singapore-Colombo service, so the latest arrangement will mean passengers now have the choice of morning or evening departures from Singapore.
“Building on the relationship we have with SriLankan through oneworld, we’ll offer customers travelling from Australia more connections to Colombo via Singapore, with… your baggage checked right through to their destination,” said Qantas’ executive manager for international sales, Stephen Thompson.
The codeshare with Qantas will be SriLankan’s fifth such arrangement with a oneworld partner, following previous deals with Malaysia Airlines, S7, Royal Jordanian and Finnair.
