Thousands US flights cancelled as it braces for lower temperatures

More than 9,000 flights in the USA have already been cancelled during the last four days with thousands more to be dropped as the country faces its coldest temperatures in 20 years.
More than 3,000 flights were cancelled on Sunday with around 7,000 thought to be delayed according to flight tracker FlightAware, as Arctic temperatures took over the country.
Yesterday American Airlines’ flights from London to Chicago left an hour later than planned, with today’s scheduled to run on time.
All British Airways and Virgin Atlantic UK flights bound for the US took off yesterday with today’s due to depart on time, although some domestic routes operated by Delta were cancelled.
Another icy blast is due to hit the US this week causing temperatures to drop to as low as -51 degrees, the lowest seen in two decades.
The US National Weather Service also warned parts of Florida could plunge into zero degree temperatures, as two thirds of the country was thought to be impacted by the conditions yesterday.
According to TravelMail, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard has upgraded the city’s emergency level to ‘red’ meaning it is illegal to drive unless for emergency purposes or to find shelter. The warning has not been placed since 1978 when a blizzard struck.
The weather has been blamed for 16 deaths across the country and temporarily closed New York’s JFK Airport when an aircraft skidded on the taxiway.
Warmer weather is expected to come in towards the end of the week.
