The operators of Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport have acquired three villages, which will now be levelled to make way for new runways.

Indonesia’s Antara news agency reports that PT Angkasa Pura II, a state-owned airport company, has acquired a total of 173.2 hectares of land currently occupied by the villages of Rawa Burung, Bojong Renged and Rawa Rengas. Compensation has been agreed with residents, which is said to vary depending on the plot.

Following the land deal, the development of Soekarno-Hatta’s third runway is expected to be completed by 2018. A fourth runway could then be added by 2024. This follows the opening of Jakarta airport’s third terminal last summer.
