The UK’s largest tour operator, Luton-based TUI UK & Ireland, is celebrating after scooping a number of awards at a ceremony to honour the country’s top employers for school and college leavers – where the holiday company behind Thomson and First Choice was ranked best employer in Hospitality and Tourism and fourth overall in a run-down of the nation’s 100 best.
Recently-appointed London Mayor Sadiq Khan was among the guests at London’s City Hall for the fourth annual Top 100 Employers for School & College Leavers Awards, which saw TUI recognised for its school-leavers scheme which was launched in 2012.
Under the scheme school-leavers complete a two-year rotation of roles within the Commercial division, which allows them to get to grips with everything from pricing hotels and flights to the launch of new resorts, before receiving a nationally-recognised qualification upon completion.
Since 2012, 80 per cent of those who have been involved in the TUI programme have been retained in permanent roles. TUI is actively expanding its school leaver programmes and developing strong accredited links with Apprentice Programmes to ensure that the schemes continue to provide excellent learning and development and become a credible alternative to more traditional further education.
Kendall Bull, from Stopsley, is part of the Thomson Cruises team at TUI, having successfully completed the school-leavers scheme after attending Luton Sixth Form College. She said: “Our school-leavers programme is truly deserving of this recognition. Speaking from first-hand experience, the scheme provides so many skills and responsibilities from day one – as well as fantastic support and encouragement. I’d recommend this scheme to anyone who wants to work in the travel industry and is looking for an alternative to further university.
Elsewhere, having been pipped to the post by Mercedes-Benz, the top-ranked employer for school-leavers on the night, TUI also picked up the ‘Best for Skills Development’ and ‘Top Employer in Hospitality and Tourism’ gongs.
Sadiq Khan offered his support to the event. “I am looking forward to working with the employers celebrated to make sure young people and businesses get the skills they need to succeed.”
