United Airlines has launched new Boeing 787 Dreamliner service between San Francisco Chengdu, the capital of southwest China’s Sichuan province.
The new route makes United the first US carrier to fly direct to a city in mainland China other than Beijing or Shanghai, and the first trans-Pacific route from Chengdu.
“United offers travellers more choices to more of the world than any other airline and we’re proud to expand our global reach with the first trans-Pacific service to Chengdu,” said Dave Hilfman, United’s senior vice president of worldwide sales. “With more than 250 of the Fortune 500 companies located in the area, and as home to the giant panda and Sichuan cuisine, Chengdu will be a popular destination for both business and leisure travellers.”
United will use its new 219-seat B787-8 to operate the thrice weekly service. Flights will depart San Francisco International Airport at 1325 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and arrive at Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport at 1840 the following day.
On the return leg, flights will depart Chengdu at 0950 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, arriving back into San Francisco at 0840 the same day, having crossed the International Date Line. The flying time is approximately 13-14 hours.
Chengdu becomes the ninth destination United serves in the Asia Pacific region direct from San Francisco.
