United Airlines has reached a milestone in the roll-out of in-flight Wi-Fi across its fleet, with the launch of its 100th internet-equipped aircraft.
The US airline is fitting approximately 30 aircraft each month with satellite Wi-Fi technology and expects to have nearly 200 aircraft equipped with the service by the end of 2013.
It currently offers Wi-Fi on 13 Boeing 747 aircraft, which fly international routes to and from San Francisco and Los Angeles, as well as on more than half its fleet of Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft, which operate in North America markets. In addition, Wi-Fi is now available on United’s entire fleet of Boeing 757 trans-continental aircraft, which operate between New York and Los Angeles and San Francisco.
“United is improving the in-flight experience and offering more customers the ability to stay connected, whether travelling throughout the country or abroad,” said Jeff Foland, the airline’s executive vice president of marketing, technology & strategy. “The expansion of satellite Wi-Fi capability underscores our commitment to provide our customers with the user-friendly experience they expect from the world’s leading airline.”
In addition to the Wi-Fi, United currently offers live television on 200 aircraft, and from this autumn it expects to begin rolling-out Wi-Fi-enabled in-flight entertainment across its fleet, allowing passengers to access content via their personal electronic devices.
