United Airlines is planning to overhaul its global network of airport lounges.
In the coming year, the airline will renovate its United Club lounges at Chicago O’Hare, Washington Reagan, Hong Kong and Tokyo Narita airports. It will also build new lounges in Atlanta and San Francisco.
United said the new and renovated lounges would reflect the style of its recently launched lounge at London Heathrow Airport’s new Terminal 2, which has won awards for its design.
But the main focus of the upgrades will come in terms of service. United said it will re-train its United Club staff to ensure “standards of the hotel and hospitality industry” and it is also planning a major overhaul its F&B offerings.
“We’re making major changes in our United Clubs to give our customers the elevated, hospitality-centric service and experience they deserve and expect. This year will be transformational,” said Jimmy Samartzis, United’s vice president of customer experience.
“Our new fresh, tasty and healthy food offerings, overhauled service approach, and systematic investment in renovating the rest of our 49 clubs worldwide will give our customers an airport getaway for relaxing or being productive during the hustle and bustle of their travel day.”
In terms of F&B, United will launch a new complimentary food menu in its United Clubs, focusing on healthy eating. This will include Greek yogurt bars and hot oatmeal stations. All United Clubs worldwide will feature the new food concepts by the end of 2015. It will also improve its selection of drinks, with a new range of wines, beers and spirits.
United is investing more than US$50 million to renovate its United Clubs, in an effort to create “the largest and best lounge network of any US carrier”.
