United Airlines is planning to launch direct flights between San Francisco and Tokyo Haneda Airport, after new slots became available at the Japanese airport.
The airline has applied for take-off and landing slots currently used by American Airlines for its New York JFK-Haneda service, which will be terminated. To fill the gap at the Tokyo hub, United is now looking to expand its trans-Pacific network with the launch of direct daily flights from San Francisco in summer 2014.
“With these slots, United will be able to provide convenient daily non-stop flights between our trans-Pacific gateway in San Francisco and the close-in Tokyo Haneda airport,” said Jim Mueller, United’s vice president of Atlantic & Pacific sales. “In addition to giving customers direct access between San Francisco and Haneda, the service will also offer connecting opportunities at the San Francisco hub from cities across United’s route network.”
The proposed San Francisco-Haneda flights will complement United’s existing daily San Francisco-Tokyo Narita service, which will continue to operate.
United currently operates more than 300 daily flights from San Francisco to more than 90 cities, including Beijing, Hong Kong, Osaka, Seoul, Shanghai, Sydney and Tokyo Narita, and beginning next year, Taipei and Chengdu.
