United Airlines is embarking on a major expansion of its Asia Pacific operations, with the launch of new routes to Australia, China, Japan and Korea.
On 26 October 2014, the US carrier will commence two new trans-Pacific routes, connecting Los Angeles with Melbourne and San Francisco with Tokyo Haneda Airport. Then on 27 and 28 October respectively, another two new routes will connect the US Pacific island of Guam with Seoul and Shanghai.
“These four new routes further strengthen United’s presence in the Pacific, already the most extensive among US airlines,” said Brian Znotins, United’s vice president of network.
“New non-stop service to Melbourne and Haneda from our powerhouse West Coast hubs, and the additional new flights from our Guam hub to both Seoul and Shanghai, offer our customers convenience and schedule options that no other airline can offer.”
The new LA-Melbourne route will be operated six times a week using United’s brand new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This will be United’s first international route using the aircraft, and the longest Dreamliner route in the world at more than 12,700km.
The San Francisco-Haneda route meanwhile, will operate daily using a Boeing 777 aircraft. These new flights will complement United’s existing service from San Francisco to Tokyo Narita Airport.
Finally, United will launch two new routes from its Pacific hub at Guam. Daily flights to Seoul Incheon International Airport commence on Monday, with twice-weekly services to Shanghai Pudong International Airport – the first direct flight from Guam to mainland China – launching on Tuesday.
