United Airlines will introduce the three-class Boeing 777 on its Australian routes next year.
The US carrier has announced that from 1 April 2014 the 269-seat B777-200ER will be deployed on its daily to Sydney and Melbourne routes, from both Los Angeles and San Francisco. It will replace the older 374-seat B747-400.
“The 777 will be the ideal aircraft for our Australia routes in terms of both capacity and customer amenities,” said James Mueller, United’s vice president of Atlantic & Pacific sales.
“Our trans-Pacific services from Sydney and Melbourne are an important part of United’s global route network, and we look forward to offering our customers a full range of in-flight products and services on the 777,” he added.
The B777-200ER will offer eight seats in first class, 40 in business class and 221 in economy, including 117 ‘economy plus’ seats with extra legroom. Both the first and business class cabins feature flat-bed seats, while all passengers will be offered in-flight entertainment systems and power outlets. United is also in the process of rolling out in-flight Wi-Fi on its B777s.
United currently flies daily flights to Sydney and Melbourne from San Francisco and Los Angeles, as well as operating a twice-weekly service between Cairns and Guam.
