A new airline based in northwest Chinese’s Xinjiang region has been cleared for take-off.
Urumqi Airlines is the latest regional carrier from China’s HNA Group, which also operates Hainan Airlines, Tianjin Airlines and Lucky Air, among others. And in a statement posted on its website this week, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) confirmed that Urumqi Airlines has now received its Air Operator’s Certificate. The new airline is now set to launch its operations on 15 August 2014.
A joint venture between Hainan Airlines and the state-owned Urumqi Urban Construction Investment Co Ltd, Urumqi Airlines will be based at Urumqi’s Diwopu International Airport, in the capital of Xinjiang.
Hainan Airlines, which owns a 70% stake in the start-up, will initially provide three Boeing 737-800 aircraft to Urumqi Airlines, as well as supplying pilots and flight attendants.
The new carrier will operate under the ‘UQ’ code, initially serving domestic routes. It also plans to fly to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, before launching international routes in the future.
