Several major companies in the travel industry have spoken out against proposed legislation that would allow businesses to refuse service to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender customers.

The bill, which was passed in Arizona this week, has outraged many in the industry. Delta Air Lines, which is based in Georgia, said it is “deeply concerned” about the legislation.

“If passed into law, these proposals would cause significant harm to many people and will result in job losses. They would also violate Delta’s core values of mutual respect and dignity,” the airline said in a statement.

The world’s biggest hotel company, IHG, also said it was worried about the proposed regulations.

“The negative effects of these proposals, if passed into law, would be wide-reaching and significant for both businesses and individuals. IHG opposes these proposals and adds its voice to those urging state officials to reject them,” the company said.

Other US tourism giants to have voiced their opposition to the measures include American Airlines, Marriott International, Starwood, United Continental and Wyndham Worldwide.

Similar legislation is also being considered in the states of Kansas, Ohio and Missouri.
