Independent holiday company Sykes Cottages has released a new report focusing on holiday booking trends in the UK.
The report found that the majority of holidaymakers book more than one UK break per year, 34% book two, 22% book three and 20% book four or more.
The data shows that most people tend to book early for longer breaks (five nights or more):
- One in five people book three months in advance;
- More than a third book six months or more ahead;
- Half of solo travellers book their UK breaks three months ahead of going away.
Further analysis revealed a general trend towards booking in advance, with the majority of respondents believing customers have become more inclined to book ahead in the past two years, although many also felt that booking last minute could perhaps get them a better deal.
Miles Hill, chief executive of Sykes Cottages, said: “As disposable incomes rise, we will see more frequent holidays, with more short breaks outside of the main holiday periods.
“Customers are becoming more comfortable booking and paying for holidays online and are increasingly using mobile devices to do so as 4G coverage becomes more widespread.”
The report found that across all backgrounds and income groups, 80% of holidaymakers would expect to pay between £250 and £749 for their accommodation, suggesting that domestic holidaymakers have a clear idea on what they are prepared to pay and that value for money remains pivotal.
The results also named most visited counties in the UK. Yorkshire topped the poll, followed by Cumbria, Cornwall, Devon and Northumberland, respectively.
The counties also make up the list of the destinations people want to visit in the future, with Cornwall taking spot followed by Devon in second and Yorkshire in third.
Above all, the statistics show that Brits love the great outdoors and that Britain’s countryside is its most important natural asset for holidaymakers, ranking as the single most favourite type of holiday for 53% of customers.
The traditional seaside break remains strong too, with 31% ranking beach holidays as their favourite and was chosen the most likely option for those who have not yet already booked.
