VietJet Air has moved into Northeast Asian airspace for the first time, with the launch of flights to Korea.

The Vietnamese low-cost carrier has built on its recent expansion in Southeast Asia with the launch of its first ever flights to a country north of Vietnam. Two new routes, from Hanoi and Danang to Seoul, launched last week and will now operate daily using an all-economy Airbus A320 aircraft.

Flights from Hanoi will depart Noi Bai International Airport at 0145 each day, while the Danang service will leave Danang International Airport at 0200. Both flights will operate into Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, with a flying time of approximately five hours.

VietJet has also appointed SEYOU as its general sales agent (GSA) in South Korea.

The move into Northeast Asia marks a major milestone in VietJet’s operations. The LCC was only founded in 2011, but has since built up a large domestic network plus international services to the major Southeast Asia cities of Bangkok and Singapore.

It now plans to further expand its regional connections, with flights to Taiwan and Hong Kong also believed to be on VietJet’s radar.

Meanwhile, the company is on the verge of launching a new Bangkok-based subsidiary, Thai VietJet Air, which will initially operate domestic flights to major tourist destinations including Chiang Mai and Phuket. And VietJet said it “intends to launch more joint ventures with regional airline partners” in the future.
