VietJet Air has decided to target the travel trade with the signing of a new distribution agreement with Amadeus.

The Vietnamese low-cost carrier will now make its fares available to travel agents using the Amadeus global distribution system (GDS). The deal marks VietJet’s first ever GDS connection, and the airline has also chosen to use the Amadeus e-Ticket Server to manage its interline partnerships.

“This partnership is paving the way for VietJet’s entry into the global distribution,” said Luu Duc Khanh, VietJet’s managing director. “Via this agreement, Amadeus will be instrumental in helping us to achieve our business goals as we expand our operations and services to other markets. Many international airlines have approached VietJet for further partnership.

“The deal with Amadeus would help pull VietJet and global customers who are not only in Asia, Northeast Asia, but also in Eastern Europe, North America.”

The new deal extends the trend of LCCs moving into the GDS space. Already this year, AirAsia has signed its first GDS agreements and Ryanair has returned to the platform following a 10-year break. Amadeus noted that travel agency bookings for LCCs increased 11% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2014.

“We are proud to be chosen as the first global distribution provider for VietJet – an airline with a strong business development strategy and e-commerce focus for optimum user experience. We remain committed to expanding our low cost carrier content to offer the best and most relevant content to our travel agency customers,” said Hazem Hussein, executive vice president of airline commercial for Amadeus Asia Pacific.

Amadeus users are expected to have access to VietJet Air content by October 2014.
