The inaugural flight touched down at London Heathrow Airport on Wednesday, where it was met by HE Nguyen Van Thao, Vietnam’s Ambassador to the UK, Le Thanh Dzung, and Vietnam Airlines’ general manager for the UK & Ireland.

Following the launch, all of Vietnam Airlines’ five weekly direct services between Vietnam (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City) and London are now being operated by the new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, making it the first airline to operate the new aircraft between Southeast Asia and Europe. And the airline is planning to ramp up to daily services by summer 2016.

In August, Vietnam Airlines became the first Asian airline to operate both the Dreamliner and Airbus A350. A total of 19 B787-9s and 14 A350-900s will be delivered to Vietnam Airlines by early 2019, as part of a major fleet upgrade programme.

The Dreamliners will come equipped with either 274 seats in a three-cabin configuration, or 311 seats in a two-class layout. The new aircraft will also feature fully flat beds in business class and in-flight Wi-Fi services in all cabins.
