Vietnam and India strengthened their blossoming tourism ties recently, at major trade event in Kolkata.
Hosted by the Embassy of Vietnam at the Novotel Hotel & Residence Kolkata, the event was attended by more than 140 travel agents and Shri Umapada Mukherjee, West Bengal’s director of tourism.
In his welcoming speech, HE Ton Sinh Thanh, Vietnam’s Ambassador to India, highlighted the cultural links between the two countries, and the tourism potential.
“Vietnam is home of eight UNESCO world heritage [sites], well–preserved historic relics and beautiful beaches which can rival the beaches in Thailand or Malaysia,” he said.
“Indian travellers can find the affluence of Indian culture in Vietnam through Hindu temples in Ho Chi Minh city or at the My Son sanctuary as well as many Indian restaurants. Vietnam has all kind of services to satisfy the need of foreign tourists, whether for holidays, shopping, leisure, food exploration, wedding, honeymoon or for business and conference.”
Vietnam only welcomed 55,000 Indian tourists in 2014 – a small fraction of the number that visited nearby Thailand. But the number is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years, due to bilateral efforts to boost tourism and develop new air links.
Jet Airways, which sponsored the event, recently launched new services to Vietnam, via Bangkok.
