A ground-breaking ceremony was held this week to mark the start of construction on a new aviation training centre in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Airlines Aviation Training Centre (HKAATC) will be located in an 11-storey building in Chek Lap Kok, offering a total floor space of almost 23,000m². It will house 12 full flight simulators, a large safety training centre with a mock-up of a full-sized aircraft cabin and facilities for training crew in fire and smoke evacuation procedures, a training pool and emergency slides for evacuation practice.
The centre is expected to be completed in 2018 following a total investment of approximately HK$1.8 billion (US$232 million).
“The ground-breaking of the Hong Kong Airlines Aviation Training Centre represents an important milestone in the evolution of our company, since its establishment 10 years ago,” said Zhang Kui, president of Hong Kong Airlines.
“It also marks a new starting point for our development. The centre will enhance the training standards of Hong Kong’s aviation industry, and strengthen Hong Kong’s position as international aviation hub. I believe that our efforts will support Hong Kong Airlines’ endeavours to become respected in Hong Kong and around the world.”
Hong Kong Airlines, which is owned by the HNA Group, currently flies to 30 destinations across the Asia Pacific, and plans to launch 10 new routes this year.
Industry figures show that 226,000 new pilots will be required by Asia Pacific airlines in the next 20 years.
