Hong Kong welcomed the arrival of Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas cruise liner for the first time on Friday.

The ship 137,000-tonne ship became one of the largest ships to call in the city, bringing more than 3,500 passengers to Hong Kong. Around 100 government officials, travel trade members and media are on hand to welcome the liner.

“This maiden visit by Voyager of the Seas demonstrates Hong Kong’s position as a cruise hub and a ‘must-visit’ port in the region,” said Anthony Lau, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board. “Our new world-class cruise terminal, which is expected to commence operation in mid-2013 to serve even the largest vessels in the world, will further expand our capability as a cruise hub.”

The 3,840-passenger Voyager of the Seas was in Hong Kong as part of its eight-night ‘Exotic Asia’ cruise from Singapore to Shanghai. The liner will return to Hong Kong on 14 October on a 14-night sailing from Tianjin to Singapore.
