The number of international visitors to Angkor Wat increased in the first half of the year.

According to the latest data from the Siem Reap provincial tourism department, the Khmer temple complex attracted 1.12 million visits in the January-June 2013 period, 6% more than the same period last year. Of this total, South Korea accounted for the largest proportion of visitors (up 4% to 202,700 – 18% of total visits), but the number of Chinese visitors surged 76% to 137,800 – 12% of the total.

Vietnam (-38% to 78,600), Japan (+6% to 68,800) and Thailand (-12% to 54,200) were Angkor Wat’s other key source markets.

Chhoeuy Chhorn, Siem Reap’s tourism chief, told Xinhua that he expected a continued rise in Chinese visitor numbers.

“We see a steadily sharp rise in Chinese tourists to the temples in recent years and believe that the upward trend will continue thanks to Cambodia-China niceties, broader promotion of the Angkor to the world, and more direct flight connection between Cambodia and China,” Chhorn said.

Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s biggest visitor attraction, generating 2.06m international visits in 2012.
