Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) achieved another record breaking month in August 2015, hitting new monthly highs in terms of passenger traffic and flight movements.
The airport handled 6.3 million passengers last month, up 8.8% year-on-year and breaking the record for the second consecutive month. Flight movements increased by 3.4% to 34,870, another all-time high.
Hong Kong’s Airport Authority (AA) said the growth was primarily driven by Hong Kong resident and transfer traffic, which increased 13% and 11% respectively. Passenger traffic on routes to and from Southeast Asia and Japan also recorded strong growth.
“We are delighted that HKIA saw another record breaking month in August, thanks to burgeoning demand in the summer. We anticipate another travel peak during the upcoming Mid-Autumn and National Day Golden Week holidays,” said Henry Ma, the AA’s general manager for market & connectivity development.
“HKIA’s extensive flight network has recently expanded in Europe. We welcomed Scandinavian Airlines, which began operations at HKIA on 11 September, offering five-times-a-week service to Stockholm, Sweden. In addition, Cathay Pacific Airways started a new four-times-a-week passenger service to Dusseldorf on 1 September. This is the only direct service from Hong Kong to this bustling and dynamic German business centre,” added Ma.
In the first eight months of this year, HKIA handled 45.8m passenger trips and 268,685 flight movements, representing growth of 8.7% and 4.1% respectively compared to the same period last year.
